A gunman in a high-rise hotel overlooking the Las Vegas Strip opened fire on a country music festival late Sunday, killing at least 59 people and injuring at least 527 others in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

Police responded to the scene, breached the suspect’s hotel room and found that the shooter, whothey believe acted alone, had already killed himself.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility, without offering evidence, but Aaron Rouse, the FBI agent in charge in Las Vegas, said investigators saw no connection to international terrorism.

Asked about a potential motive, Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, the head of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, said he could not "get into the mind of a psychopath at this point."

At first, it sounded like fireworks — a loud, crackling noise. Then the awful realization began to spread, unevenly, through the huge crowd.

It dawned on people when they heard screams, when they saw bloodied victims collapse around them, or when others stampeded for the exits, trampling some of the people in their way.

Many of the terrified concertgoers followed their instincts and crouched or lay flat, not realizing that they remained exposed to a gunman lodged high above them.

Others surged into surrounding streets and buildings, leaving behind debris lost in the panic — drink cups, shoes, and cellphones that kept ringing for hours, as relatives and friends tried to reach their loved ones and find out if they were safe.

The gunman had 17 firearms, including a handgun, in his suite.

“We retrieved in excess of 18 additional firearms, some explosives, and several thousand rounds of ammo,” Sheriff Lombardo said.

9.webp.jpg

The sheriff said some rifles found in the hotel room may have been modified to make them fully automatic.

Stephen Paddock lived in a tidy Nevada retirement community where the amenities include golf, tennis and bocce. He was a multimillionaire real-estate investor, and liked to travel to Las Vegas to play high-stakes video poker.

(Eric Paddock):

"No affiliation, no religion, no politics. He never cared about any of that stuff," Eric Paddock said as he alternately wept and shouted. "He was a guy who had money. He went on cruises and gambled."

Public records offered no hint of financial distress or criminal history.

Paddock is much older than the typical shooter and was not known to be suffering from a mental illness.

"He knew what he wanted to do. He knew how he was going to do it, and it doesn't seem like he had any kind of escape plan at all."

The speed with which they acted is miraculous and prevented further loss of life. To have found the shooter so quickly after the first shots were fired, is something for which we will always be thankful and grateful. It shows what true professionalism is all about.

We cannot fathom their pain, we cannot imagine their loss. To the families of the victims, we are praying for you and we are here for you. And we ask God to help see you through this very dark period.

In memory of the fallen, I have directed that our great flag be flown at half-staff.

We pray for the entire nation to find unity and peace, and we pray for the day when evil is banished and the innocent are safe from hatred and from fear.

在美国白宫发言人莎拉·桑德斯(Sarah Huckabee Sanders)10月2日的记者会上,有记者问及案件发生后美国枪支管控的问题,桑德斯回应说:“言之过早”(too soon to discuss how the events should impact U.S. gun policy)。

她说:

"There's a time and place for a political debate, but now is the time to unite as a country."

"There is an ongoing law enforcement investigation," she said. "It would be premature for us to discuss policy when we don't know all of the facts."

在国际关系学院国际战略与安全研究中心主任达巍看来,拉斯维加斯枪击案是美国为社会分裂付出的又一惨重代价(the shooting in Las Vegas is a heavy price that the US has paid for its social disintegration)。

“Discussions over stricter gun control have been going on in the US for a long time, but there is hardly any progress. That's because it is increasingly difficult for different groups in the US to reach consensus.”
