Don’t Cast Away

Lin Huiyin

Don’t cast away

This handful passion of a bygone day,

Which flows like running water soft and light

Beneath the cool and tranquil fountain,

At dead of night,

In pine-clad mountain,

As vague as sighs, but you

Should e’er be true.

The moon is still so bright;

Beyond the hills the lamps shed the same light,

The sky besprinkled with star upon star,

But I do not know where you are.

It seems

You hang above like dreams.

You ask the dark night to give back your word,

But its echo is heard

And buried though unseen

Deep, deep in the ravine.

(许渊冲 译)

Do Not Throw Away

Lin Huiyin

Do not throw away

That scoop of passion from the past.

Even though passion flows softly like water

At the bottom of a cool mountain spring

In a pine grove on a dark night

And sighs an elusive sigh,

You must still preserve that truth.

The moon is still bright;

The lights below the hills are still on;

The sky is still full of stars

Hanging like dreams.

You ask the night for

Those words back – you must still believe

Their echoes

In the valley.

Summer 1932

Don’t Discard This

Phyllis Lin

Don’t discard

This hold of passing passion,

Now flowing like water,

A light motion,

At the bottom of the cool spring,

At night, in the pine wood,

A vagueness like a sigh,

You’d still keep that truth crude!

The same moon bright,

The same lamplight beyond the hill,

Stars all over the sky,

Only out of your sight,

Hung like a dream,

You will have back from the night

That expression: You should believe

There lingers in the vale

The echo trail!

(赵彦春 译)

Ne’er Forget

Lin Huiyin

Ne’er forget

the wisp of passion of yore,

which’s flowing like a stream,

soft ’n sore,

under the cold vale spring,

on dark nights, in pine wood,

sighing glimpse of hope slim,

but you should still keep true for good!

The moon remains bright;

o’er hills shines the same lamp light.

Stars light the sky,

but you can’t be seen,

hanging like a dream.

You ask the dark night for

the words for aye –

You should believe still:

remains in the vale

that echo trail!
