Working long hours at one of China’s biggest car plants, lovelorn Chen Tianxing had few opportunities to meet girls, and after attending three badly-organised match-making events he was beginning to lose all hope.
But under a bright yellow and red banner saying “Wuhan Communist Youth League hope you can quickly find your other half”, Mr Chen met a young nurse who would change his life.

“I remember saying she was pretty, and luckily she felt I was nice too,” he said.
“I was always so busy. The event not only gave me a chance to meet girls, but more importantly, the time to express myself.”
The pair began talking when he gave her the prize their team had won in a game, but it was during the final challenge that they knew they would meet again.
“We were ordered to name anyone we had feelings for,” said Mr Zhao. “We both said each other at the same time – and that felt great!”

The government has launched an ambitious ‘blind date drive’ to encourage single youth to get hitched.
Young singles are encouraged to participate in organised blind dates following a guideline issued by the Communist Youth League (CYL) to help young people find the right partner.

“When young people work well at the job of ensuring happiness in love and marriage,” the guidance said. “This not only impacts the healthy development of the young, but also benefits social harmony and stability.”
In response to the call, the CYL Zhejiang Provincial Committee established a special department for matchmaking in June and organised a blind date event which attracted 5,000 people.

If you’re a “single dog,” a “bare branch,” a “leftover man” or a “leftover woman” — all monikers for unmarried Chinese — you may find Valentine’s Day particularly trying.
“A lot of the consumerist and entertainment activities are so geared toward couples that you kind of get a bit of hurt everywhere in the big cities in China.”
There were 33.59 million more men than women in China in 2016, according to figures from the country’s National Bureau of Statistics, and 48.78% of China’s 1.38 billion people are female, compared with a global average of 49.55%.
There are long-held traditions that the husband must be able to offer a decent level of financial security before he can secure a wife.
That adds to the issue, with large numbers of men, partly because of the financial costs of marriage, are opting to marry later.
And when they do settle down they are often looking for younger women. Age gaps of 10 to 20 years or more are common in Chinese marriages.
Well-educated and financially independent women who remain single are called “unwanted girls”.
Then there are the outdoor marriage markets. At one of the country's largest in Shanghai, the “matchmaking corner” is inundated by parents who post hand-written adverts for their single children with details such as the income, education and personality. Some parents have been known to visit the market every week for years with no success.
现在,单身人士会“自己就餐、自己旅游、自己从事各种活动”(singles “dine, travel and pursue activities by themselves”)。
The introduction of large plush toys to accompany solo diners highlights the efforts of businesses in China to take advantage of a demographic shift creating a rising number of single consumers.
“They help people feel less lonely.”
她的情绪跌宕起伏(she experienced a gamut of emotions):
“I was shocked at first. Then I felt warm. But in the end I felt awkward because it reminded me of the fact that I’m single.”
65% of its orders came from unmarried customers, with fast food the most popular order for single consumers.
“Singles are the most important group of customers for us. ”
